I hope you had a wonderful week and are enjoying the fall weather. I would like to begin this week’s update by expressing my deepest gratitude to the members of our Board of Education in honor of School Board Recognition Month.
Our school board members serve as dedicated, unpaid volunteers who devote countless hours to supporting our district's mission. They spend time analyzing policy, attending committee meetings, balancing budgets, and making thoughtful decisions, all centered on what is best for our students, staff, and community. Their leadership, advocacy, and steadfast commitment ensure that our district continues to foster a safe, supportive, and high-achieving learning environment. As many of you know, earlier this week our school transportation services experienced unexpected disruptions due to acts of vandalism at Durham School Services, which impacted approximately 50 bus routes and 1,800 students.
We provide our school district transportation through six bus vendors including Durham School Services, Brown Transportation, Capital Bus, A+ MediTrans, Amazing Grace, and CDTA. When we were alerted of the situation, our bus vendors came together seamlessly to absorb the routes that were unable to be serviced by Durham. Capital Bus played a major role and continues to assist Durham with coverage. Throughout the week, Durham's team has been working on getting their fleet back together, allowing assistance from other vendors to be gradually reduced. This effort will continue until Durham is 100% back on their feet. We cannot say enough about how our vendor team came together to service our students.
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who immediately stepped up to navigate this challenging situation, as well as our entire Transportation Department for their incredible hard work and swift response in minimizing the impact on our families. In particular, I would like to offer a special thank you to Al Valachovic and Nicole Stabinski from our transportation team, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to find creative solutions and ease the stress during a critical time.
We fully understand that these disruptions created an inconvenience for many of our students and families. We deeply appreciate your patience, flexibility, and understanding as our team worked to restore normal routes as quickly and safely as possible.

We frequently hear from community members asking why the district cannot comment publicly when certain issues or incidents involving students or staff arise. As Mr. Gerhardt explained, state and federal mandates, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), New York Education Law 2-d, and employment privacy regulations, strictly prohibit school officials from disclosing confidential details regarding student discipline, academic records, or personnel actions.
We want to share this context with our community because open communication is a priority for us, and we recognize that our silence in certain situations can sometimes feel frustrating. However, maintaining these boundaries is far more than just a legal requirement. It is a vital commitment to protecting the dignity, safety, and personal privacy of every student and staff member in our care. We appreciate your partnership and understanding as we balance transparency with our duty to protect our school family.

Chief Whipple presented the award to Nique in recognition of his extraordinary courage during a recent medical emergency at home. When a family member needed immediate medical attention, Nique acted without hesitation, quickly calling 911 and contacting another family member for help. While waiting for emergency responders to arrive, he remained remarkably calm and ensured both he and his younger brother stayed safe. Emergency personnel credited Nique's swift thinking and composure with saving his relative's life.
We are incredibly proud of Nique for his bravery and quick action. A special thank you to the Schenectady Police Department and our Community Engagement Officers for recognizing such an inspiring young man in our school community.
