DESCRIPTION:
The RETELL initiative (Rethinking Equity in the Teachi
ng of English Language Learners) represents a commitment to address the pe
rsistent gap in academic proficiency experienced by ELL students. At the h
eart of this initiative are training and licensure requirements for the Sh
eltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement\, which core academic teachers
of ELLs and principals/assistant principals and supervisors/directors who
supervise or evaluate such teachers must obtain.

The
purpose of this course is to prepare the Commonwealth’s teachers with th
e knowledge and skills to effectively shelter their content instruction so
that our growing population of English language learners (ELLs) can acces
s curriculum\, achieve academic success\, and contribute their multilingua
l and multicultural resources as participants and future leaders in the 21
st century global economy.
The course has three overarchin
g goals:
1. To help teachers effectively carry out their r
esponsibility for the teaching and learning of ELLs as well as to understa
nd the social and cultural issues that contribute to and impact the school
ing of ELLs.
2. To expand teachers’ knowledge of how lan
guage functions within academic content teaching and learning\, and how ch
ildren and adolescents acquire a second language.
3. To pr
ovide teachers with practical\, research-based protocols\, methods\, and s
trategies to integrate subject-area content\, language\, and literacy deve
lopment—per the expectations of the World Class Instructional Design and
Assessment (WIDA) English Language Development Standards (ELDS)—and thu
s to support ELL students’ success with all state academic standards.</s
