Many districts provide strong mentorin g support during a teacher’s first year but struggle to maintain structu red support for educators in years 2–5 as they work toward professional licensure.
This course offers a ready-to-implement solution that ext ends mentoring beyond Year 1\, supports teacher growth\, and aligns with D ESE professional licensure eligibility requirements.
Participants wi ll engage in reflective practice\, instructional learning\, and mentor-sup ported feedback designed to strengthen classroom effectiveness and support long-term teacher retention.

Course Description: The RETELL initiative (Rethinking
Equity in the Teaching of English Language Learners) represents a commitme
nt to address the persistent gap in academic proficiency experienced by EL
L students. At the heart of this initiative are training and licensure req
uirements for the Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement\, which co
re academic teachers of ELLs and principals/assistant principals and super
visors/directors who supervise or evaluate such teachers must obtain.
The purpose of this course is to prepare the Commonwealth
’s teachers with the knowledge and skills to effectively shelter their c
ontent instruction so that our growing population of English language lear
ners (ELLs) can access curriculum\, achieve academic success\, and contrib
ute their multilingual and multicultural resources as participants and fut
ure leaders in the 21st century global economy.
The course
has three overarching goals:
1. To help teachers effectiv
ely carry out their responsibility for the teaching and learning of ELLs a
s well as to understand the social and cultural issues that contribute to
and impact the schooling of ELLs.
2. To expand teachers’
knowledge of how language functions within academic content teaching and
learning\, and how children and adolescents acquire a second language.
3. To provide teachers with practical\, research-based protoc
ols\, methods\, and strategies to integrate subject-area content\, languag
e\, and literacy development—per the expectations of the World Class Ins
tructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English Language Development Stand
ards (ELDS)—and thus to support ELL students’ success with all state a
cademic standards.
