tion\, and referrals are intended for students who demonstrate characteris
tics of giftedness and a need for services beyond those typically provided
in the general education classroom.
What Does "Gifted" Mean?
According to the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE):"Intel
lectually gifted children and youth are those who perform or who have demo
nstrated the potential to perform at high levels in academic or creative f
ields when compared with others of their age\, experience\, or environment
. These students require services not ordinarily provided by the regular s
chool program. Gifted students can be found in all populations\, across al
l economic strata\, and in all areas of human endeavor."
