Dear Randolph Community,
I would like to thank everyone who participated in the budget vote process this year. While the outcome of the second vote was not what many had hoped for, the community has spoken, and it is now our responsibility to move forward in accordance with New York State law while continuing to provide the best possible educational opportunities for our students.
Over the coming days, the Board of Education will be considering the adoption of a contingency budget for the 2026-2027 school year. Because there is often confusion surrounding what a contingency budget means, I believe it is important to share some facts and provide clarity about what residents can expect moving forward.
Many people associate contingency budgets with immediate program eliminations, reductions in athletics, or significant cuts to student opportunities. While that may have been true decades ago when school districts operated under what were commonly referred to as \"austerity budgets,\" New York State law has changed substantially over time.
Today, contingency budgets are governed primarily by spending limitations and restrictions on certain categories of expenditures. School districts retain significant discretion in determining how to allocate resources within those legal constraints. As a result, each district's contingency budget may look different depending on local priorities and financial circumstances.
At Randolph, the contingency budget currently under consideration does not include the immediate elimination of any academic program, athletic program, extracurricular activity, or student service as a direct result of adopting the contingency budget.
That does not mean that difficult financial decisions have disappeared. The financial challenges facing our district remain very real. Rather, it means that the Board of Education has chosen to adopt a contingency spending plan that allows us to begin the school year while preserving flexibility and maintaining the educational experiences our students and families value.
As we move through the 2026-2027 school year, the Board of Education and district administration will continue to carefully monitor revenues, expenditures, enrollment trends, staffing needs, and overall financial conditions. This ongoing review process is not unique to a contingency budget year; it is part of responsible financial management.
The reality is that all school districts must continuously evaluate programs and services to ensure resources are aligned with student needs and long-term financial sustainability. Randolph will be no different. Throughout the year, the Board will review spending patterns, assess program effectiveness, and consider opportunities for efficiencies and cost savings where appropriate.
No decisions have been made regarding future reductions, and any discussions regarding potential changes would occur through the Board of Education's public process with transparency and community engagement.
The Board's immediate goal is to adopt a legally compliant contingency budget that allows the district to continue operating effectively while preserving as many opportunities for students as possible. The Board is scheduled to consider adoption of the contingency budget at its June 30, 2026 meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the High School Library.
At the same time, we recognize that the long-term financial challenges facing the district require continued attention and thoughtful planning. Adoption of a contingency budget is an important step in ensuring stability for the coming school year, but it is not the end of the work ahead. Throughout the summer and into the next school year, the Board of Education and administration will continue to evaluate district operations, spending patterns, and long-range financial strategies to identify additional efficiencies and develop a sustainable path forward.
Our commitment remains clear: to be responsible stewards of taxpayer resources while maintaining the strongest educational program possible for the students of Randolph Central School District.
I encourage community members to attend Board of Education meetings, review information posted by the district, and reach out with questions. Open communication and community involvement remain critical as we work together to navigate the challenges ahead.
Randolph has a proud tradition of academic achievement, student success, strong extracurricular programs, and community support. Despite the challenges before us, our commitment to students remains unchanged.

The Randolph Central School District Board of Education will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in the High School Library.
The purpose of the meeting is to adopt the district's 2026-27 contingency budget, as required under New York State law following the defeat of the proposed budget by district voters. The contingency budget being considered has been developed to comply with all legal requirements and will establish the district's spending plan for the start of the 2026-27 school year.
The Board recognizes that adopting a contingency budget is only the first step in addressing the district's long-term financial challenges. Throughout the coming year, the Board and administration will continue to review district operations, expenditures, staffing, programs, and services to identify opportunities for additional savings and to strengthen the district's financial position moving forward.
